In honor of winningFootwear News’ icon award, the fashion mogullooked back at some of her most iconic Y2K looks— including her major hair transformation in 2006.
Simpson, who has often worn long hair throughout her career, debuted a short bob at the end of August that year, which she attributes to a major life change:her divorcefromNick Lachey.
“I was going through a divorce and I just said take it all off,” Simpson said, looking back at a look she wore onThe Early Show.
The haircut came two months after her divorce from Lachey and in the midst of a press tour for Simpson’s last pop record,A Public Affair.The couple tied the knot in 2002 and confirmed their split in November 2005.
In a statement released at the time, the pair called the breakup ”the mutual decision of two people with an enormous amount of respect and admiration for each other.”

In 2020,Simpson told PEOPLEthat Lachey was her “first love.”
In her memoir, which was released in March 2021, Simpsonpublished journal entriesfrom her 2005 diary. In one note, Simpson wrote, “I didn’t want to be married any longer but I was also afraid to be alone with ‘no one to call my own but the night.’”

In 2014,Simpson marriedformer NFL playerEric Johnson, with whom she shares three children.
Like her iconic post-breakup haircut, Simpson toldFootwear Newsthat all her old looks hold a special place in her heart: “I honestly keep everything — too many things.”
Simpson added that she keeps her clothes in two storage units, and she remembers the details of every look: “They all have a story.”
