Jamie Lee Curtisis sharing the beginnings of her andChristopher Guest’s love story.
When Curtis, 66, appeared on the Monday, Dec. 2 episode ofJimmy Kimmel Live, she andJimmy Kimmelnoted that Curtis and herhusbandGuest, 76, are approaching their 40th wedding anniversary on Dec. 18. After Kimmel asked Curtis to share how Guest proposed to her, she began recounting that they met after she saw his photo in a magazine.
“I called his agent and left my number, he never called me. We ran into each other in a restaurant, he kind of went like this [waves], I went like this [waves], he called me the next day. We went out,” she said, noting that their relationship progressed quickly. Curtis even shared that she just recently “found the receipt of when he went into Cartier to buy this very ring on my finger.”
“He was shootingSNLin New York and I was shooting the moviePerfect. I was on something called a payphone where you put quarters in and I remember we were speaking and I said, ‘What did you do today?’ " she added. Guest told her he “went for a walk” around the city and added that he visited a Cartier store on Fifth Avenue.
“And then in typical boy fashion, ‘Do you like diamonds?’ Now, I’m telling the truth. So then he came out to Los Angeles and… Well, he proposed in a more private and intimate way,” Curtis said.

Curtis marked the40th anniversary of her first date with Guestin an Instagram post she shared back on July 2. Years ago, she recalled the same story about Guest buying her a ring in September 1984 in a personal essay she wrote forOprah.com, recalling that the pair went from first date to marriage in just six months.

“You know what, he’s just that guy,” Curtis told Kimmel, when asked if Guest thought he “was being coy” when he asked Curtis if she liked diamonds. “He literally walked in and the woman behind the counter was like, ‘Hi, can I help you?’ And he goes, ‘Yeah, I need a ring,’ and he goes, ‘That one,’ and she goes, ‘What size?’ And he goes, ‘That one.’ "

“Chance encounter. Life hinging. Children growing,” Curtis wrote in her JulyInstagram captioncommemorating her and Guest’s first date. “LOVE IS LOVE!”
