before this month , approximate 76 million households — orroughly one-half of the menage in America — were distressed to listen their JPMorgan Chase accounts hadbeen compromised . Those 76 million family will be equally unhappy to learn that the hackers who broke in were wander around the bank ’s serversfor two months . Two whole months !
The New York Timesjust revealed the length of the breachin a protracted feature on the state of cyber security in the fiscal services industry . ( Spoiler : it stinks . ) The newspaper did note that “ it is not rare for hackers to rummage through a big company ’s web for several months before being detected . ” In fact , The New York Times itselfwas hack for four uncoiled month . That does n’t make the detail from the JPMorgan any less unsettling , though .
So this is the brave novel world that Wall Street is struggling to navigate . The Grey Lady has hold JPMorgan and banking company like it as “ too self-aggrandising to fasten , ” in part because so many third political party relationships are likely security department vulnerability . JPMorgan says that it does n’t suppose a third party compromise its system this sentence around . But again , that ’s not much consolation to the one-half of America that just got hacked . [ NYT ]
