Do n’t get me wrong — Gotham is an entertaining show , and I still believe it ’s mostly solve its spirit problem and hit on a uniformly “ dark summer camp ” feel that works pretty well . But last night ’s installment really underscore how much this show is go to struggle with being a Batman prequel . Spoilers ahead …
Last night ’s installment was another immense footfall forward in a show that ’s apparently trying to tell the origins of every major Batman villain , along with the early years of Bruce Wayne becoming Batman . We met Harvey Dent , who is basically already on his path to becoming Two - grimace , and meanwhile we spent a lot more sentence with Catwoman . And Penguin descry on Fish Mooney .
So first off , Harvey Dent . He ’s already an assistant D.A. who is known to Allen and Montoya as a trusty lawyer who ’s willing to adhere his cervix out . So Gordon goes to Dent with the intelligence that he has a spectator who can identify the killer of Thomas and Martha Wayne . ( That ’s Selina “ Catwoman ” Kyle , more on her in a import . )
Dent not only expresses willingness to pursue anyone and everyone — where was he last week ? — but he also decides to tell people that there ’s a witness , in the Leslie Townes Hope of drawing out the real culprit . Dent believes that a brand new crime knob we ’ve never met before , Lovecraft , is behind the whole thing . So he confronts Lovecraft , and it does n’t go that well .
As with a caboodle of the other Bat - baddie on this show , the prefiguration is heavy with Dent . He has a two - direct coin that he likes to flip , which he use to propose a puerile delinquent a 2nd chance . He ’s filmed with half his face in trace a lot of the time . And when he is get across by Lovecraft , he allow out a little of his inner Cthulhu , if you see what I mean . He ’s fundamentally poise to become Two - typeface , even before he gets a splash of Lucy in the sky with diamonds . Which , fair enough — I get that Two - Face was always in there , and his disfigurement just add that side of him out .
Still , it seems as though Harvey Dent is already middling much quick to get bump off with acid and start wearing a half - tartan crown . And he ’s already partnering up with Jim Gordon to clean up Gotham City — plus he ’ll be force 50 by the time Bruce is quick to become Batman . These things do n’t bear too much thought about , but I feel like the show is push me to think about them .
In any case , we know that Jim Gordon and Harvey Dent are locomote to fail to clean up Gotham , and that they ’re apparently move to keep trying for the next 15 eld . So the playfulness is in watching them try out , and the notion of the Wayne murder being the fulcrum that breaks exposed Gotham ’s criminal offence conglomerate is sort of an interesting one . This show is building up to the estimation that there ’s a Big Secret behind the Waynes ’ demise , and of course that mean it ’ll have to present .
Oh , and Barbara has plain left Jim Gordon for just , because she ’s not substantial enough to be with him . She leave alone him a Federal Reserve note , which Selina reads . And then instead of provide Ithiel Town or whatever , she proceed and sleeps with her X , Renee Montoya . Gordon ’s colleague , whom he ’s presently trying to team up with . skillful one , Bar .
Meanwhile , the case that Gordon and Bullock are investigating turn out to be tied to Fish Mooney ’s a la mode power play . She ’s gotten some Russian thugs who used to act for Nikolai , her lover , to break a bomb - making expert out of prison house . He used to blow up empty buildings to protest weapon makers and stuff , but now they require him to blow open a vault and steal some of Carmine Falcone ’s money . ( But then the cash gets blown up , along with the Russians , thanks to a turkey activated by a earphone with a “ Final Countdown ” ringtone . This show is turning into all comic ringtones , all the time . )
This is all just part of Fish ’s outline to weaken Falcone so she can take his place , and thus far it seems to be exercise middling well , thanks to her right - helping hand valet de chambre , Butch . ( It ’s a bar of this show ’s idolatry to camp that a gangster named Butch is the least campy affair on it . )
But Pisces is heading for trouble , because the Penguin figure out the truth about Liza , the infant - faced vocalist whom she sent to make Carmine Falcone . He calculate this out by whiff Liza ’s underthings and then sniffle Fish Mooney , and scenting lilacs . There ’s a destiny of inappropriate smelling in this episode . The Penguin finally confronts Liza , but promises not to blow the tin whistle on her — because presumably she ’s going to be spy for him now .
And meanwhile , Selina Kyle has last sat down with a sketch artist and guide a cartoon of the man who killed the Waynes . And it ’s … nobody that anybody agnise . But to keep Selina secure , Jim Gordon arranges for her to go live at Wayne Manor , so it can be like the sitcom interlingual rendition of protective custody . Selina take in with bemusement as Bruce Wayne practice spar with Alfred , since a pugilism glove wo n’t protect you in the tangible cosmos . ( Orwill it ? )

Selina is the wizard little scamp who comes into Bruce Wayne ’s sterile life history and shakes everything up , bait him with the fact that he wants to kiss her and counterpoint her street - smart toughness with his uptight blue - blood starchy - pinch earnestness . Bruce is meddling creating his own curriculum for homeschooling , she ’s wearing goggles indoors . It ’s lovely … ish . And it leads to a raucous foodfight that run Alfred to get over his hangups about having the untested thief hold out at Wayne Manor , after all .
So again … a touch of prequel - itis . This show is trying to point before with have Selina and Bruce become besties , and Gordon and Dent become crusading crime - fighters long before Batman . But it ’s severely constrained by what we already know about Batman ’s world , even if it ’s already taking huge liberties .
I ’m honestly spell-bound to see where we are after a few years of the Batman villains all developing and Bruce still being a Kyd . I guess one hypothesis is we end up with a situation like Smallville , which by the end had the entire Justice League ( minus Batman and Wonder Woman ) in costume and push immorality , but Clark still had n’t put on the cause yet . Prequels , adult male . It ’s a weird thing .
