A big part of the “ flash - sideways ” segments seems to be the teaser - hunt aspect , looking for all the hooey that ’s dissimilar in this world , plus the fortune meeting between Oceanic 815 - Er along the elbow room . For instance , not only is this Locke still with his beloved Helen ( and plan their hymeneals ) , but he ’s also Quaker with his dad , judging from Helen ’s remarks , plus his stall wall :

The Island segments of last night ’s episode , on the other hand , were middling thrilling and gripping – although as I name , Sawyer slip the show for the 2nd week run . The grief - stricken , married woman - beater - put on , liquor - dog Sawyer seemed to make his own delineate pick last dark – he ’s go to join up with Smokey to rebel against the island ’s dictates and get the Hades off this lush tropical rock . In any case , presumptively there ’s a selection process for Candidates , which incline to kill them . ( pass judgment from all the other names . ) And because Locke was a Candidate , as Smokey tell Alpert , he was able to get inside the statue and play Ben “ Stabby McStabberson ” Linus .
But even though Smokey managed to kill Jacob , he still has n’t win his freedom , which is why , as Ilana puts it , he ’s “ recruit ” for his little gang . First he tries to enrol Richard Alpert , which does n’t go that well , and then he has better fate with Sawyer . I ’m seeing echoes of time of year four , when the castaways split into “ Team Jack ” and “ Team Locke , ” based on whether they believe the Freighter People were favorable . ( The division between the two teams seemed a bit random back then , based on moving chess game while around as much as anything else . wonder if it ’ll be the same this clip ? )
Smokey also tells Sawyer , “ Before I was trapped I was a man … i know what its like to palpate pleasure , pain and betrayal , and drop off someone you love . ”
And there ’s the shining child , whom Smokey and Sawyer can see , but whom Alpert apparently ca n’t . ( I enquire if this is related to having been touch by Jacob ? ) Is this Aaron , somehow back on the island ? Jacob reincarnated ? Or someone else ? Whoever it is tells Smokey , “ You know the rules . You ca n’t kill him . ” ( Does this concern to someone other than Jacob ? ) And this function Smokey shouting Locke ’s catch phrase in choler . Oh , and Smokey also severalize that Jacob has been manipulating his chosen candidates , give them nudges at the proper times , to make for them to the island — and his manipulation of Jack appear to have consisted of giving him a candy measure at just the correct moment to accentuate his rebelliousness of his begetter .

So all in all , the island segments added some pretty challenging pieces to the puzzle and delve a slew deeper into Smokey ’s character . Plus Sawyer seemed to make a alternative that looks like it ’ll reverberate for the whole residue of the serial publication . Meanwhile , the off - island segment were fun for Easter - egg - hunting purposes , but mostly seemed to be design to reward a pretty damnatory eyeshot of poor , dead John Locke . Here ’s hoping the “ flash - sideways ” gadget start out to show more story drive in the coming sequence .
