His latest , prehistorical natural process narration Primal , hits Adult Swim this workweek — and we got the chance to babble to him about it .

None of the stories that I had were chatter with it , and then when this started to come together , I realized , “ Oh , I could do something really different . ” So the two thought met , and I update my estimation to be much more adult and gritty and more pulpy .

Tartakovsky : It ’s been nothing but support . I think if anybody questioned it , it was me , because when we were place together the first sequence , when we started to get sequence in and edit it together without any music or good effects , I was watch it and I started to get flighty . io9 : You mentioned a man and his hound , but did you have any other specific stirring behind the relationship between the caveman and the dinosaur ?
Tartakovsky : It ’s really my detent , in a way . I have this jumbo St. Bernard and she is a brat , and she does n’t listen , and we have a go at it her so much . But there ’s a lot of small affair that she does that — I think a quite a little of animals do , it ’s not just all dog - specific . I definitely mined a lot of that feeling from our relationship .

You have intercourse , we ’ve always talked about doing things that the audience rule accessible . On Dexter ’s science laboratory , it was the brother - sister family relationship — that ’s what we kind of stick right . So for this , we need a kinship to hang everything else on . These two animals , to a degree , have to discover a mode to make it together — and myself and [ my pawl ] have to find a way to survive together [ laugh ] , so there ’s a lot of little nicety that we picked up on and put it into the show .

Tartakovsky : It ’s risible because we ’ve done so many fight through Samurai Jack and Clone Wars and Sym - Bionic Titan , it ’s kind of become jolly 2d nature . Like , if you were to ask me what was the most thought-provoking thing , it would n’t be the action . In this case , the surd thing about the fights was to come up with a new fighting style . I did n’t desire to do martial arts , I did n’t want [ the caveman grapheme ] to seem like he ’s got kung fu training with a spear . I wanted it to be very brutal , very ape - like .
So , I did look at some apes fighting and affectation — the more intense thing get , the more on - all - four he gets , and walks and fight back more like a gorilla . You want it to have that identity that ’s very specific to him . So that was one of the little challenging affair . The grownup matter was , “ Oh my god , I ’ve never make a T - rex before . I ’ve never draw a T - rex fighting . ” That ’s a whole newfangled thing ; she uses her rima oris , her feet . Those are all new thing for a animal to use , and that bring in some sassy matter that we could storyboard and mess around with .

I ’ve always treated natural action as a musical sequence . It ’s fetch musical rhythm , it ’s got high and lows , it ’s father fast and slow parts . That kind of dictates the way we go with it . And the fight are fun — that ’s the great affair about it ! It was n’t just another samurai fight with a sword that we ’ve done so much . Tartakovsky : Yeah , I mean I remember it ’s something that you could generalise . It palpate more interesting as a female and a male person together . It made it one spirit level more interesting because she ’s a mother , she has lost ; he ’s a father , he has lost . And now the two are together .

io9 : What artwork inspire you and your team when you were designing the look of the show ?
Tartakovsky : Scott Wills is the one who does all the painting , and Christian Schellewald does all the draft . essentially , Christian draws almost like sort of aMoebius - y stylus where it ’s much more exemplifying . Even though he ’s worked in vitality for a long clip , his background signal is much more illustration . So that brings right away a dissimilar mindset to the way he compile . So Scott start to develop this look , working with Christian ’s background , and how the two were going to blend together . At the same time , we knew we did n’t want to just reduplicate what we ’d done in Jack — we wanted to push further for the macrocosm to come alive and to specify itself under Primal . We referred everything to the title of the show to make trusted it ’s the raw and most savage that it can be , or the simplest .

That started to really come together like that , and we also expect at a lot of sci - fi illustrations , house painting , and of row some of theRalph Bakshistuff . We wanted this spunky , not - clean , textural linework , very drawn show . And then when we set forth the character design , it fall down into place . The initial character designs I was doing were much more [ Osamu ] Tezuka - influenced , they kind of see more likeAstro Boy . Like a man version of Astro Boy . And I see , “ Yeah , that ’s too derivative , number one , and it just does n’t sense like it tally any more with the direction that we ’re run short . ” So then myself and Stephen DeStefano started doing these drawing that are much grittier , more comic Holy Scripture - y illustration .

There ’s a very big mold for animation , for the way you may do things , and a lot of spiritedness designs begin to blend together . So we want to kind of push out a little bit . There ’s a certain familiarity with what we end up with , but at the same time , it ’s a little act unique to itself .
io9 : The episode titles translate a bit over the top , but once you see them in context they are perfect . My favorite is the genuinely shuddery “ Terror Under the Blood Moon ” ! You remark sooner that you ’re not a swelled repulsion buff , but did you always know you wanted to do a horror instalment ?
Tartakovsky : For trusted . There ’s sometimes a fine contrast between horror and monster flick , and I care when I ’m doing horror , I just do n’t care watching horror . I like thriller — I care the suspense , versus just the cheap scare around the corner . It ’s comic that you mention the title because they ’re the most pulpy , cheesy thing about it , but that ’s what gives it its theoretical account , and because the show is , I think , honorable to what it ’s trying to do , it kind of connects .

And yeah , that episode , the 4th episode was titled “ The Killing Fields ” because they ’re just in this field of terror . And then Scott paint this reddish lunar month , and I was like “ Oh yeah ! Blood moonlight . ” And it changed the framework of the sequence , which was nifty . We ’re all essay to severalise the same story , either with vividness or with medicine or with visuals or with action . And that ’s the awful part of it , once you watch episode five through 10 , they ’re completely different than the first four .
