The National Parks Servicejust announced a wholesale banon drones . The new policy forbid “ launching , landing place , or operating unmanned aircraft on lands and waters administered by the National Park Service . ” Why ? Because they ’re disruptive , that ’s why .
Drones are already ban in a few national parks , include Yosemite , for the simple fact that they ’re a noisy pain in the neck . These fly robots bother park - goers . They bother parking area Ranger . And perhaps most importantly , they bother the wildlife . The Parks Service release even lists infraction :
In April , visitors at Grand Canyon National Park gathered for a quiet sunset , which was interrupted by a flashy remote-controlled aircraft flying back and forth and eventually crashing in the canon . subsequently in the month , military volunteer at Zion National Park witnessed an unmanned aircraft shake up a herd of bighorn sheep , reportedly separating adult from new animals .

Disturbing the sheep !
Not all hope is lost for hobbyists who want a beautiful backcloth for their aerial droning - o - graphs , though . The Parks Service itself will also continue using radio-controlled aircraft “ for administrative purposes such as search and delivery , flaming operation and scientific study . ” The new policy is key as a “ temporary measure ” pending a more permanent regulation which “ can take considerable time ” to get approved .
This , of course , fall into the larger campaign of figuring out exactlyhow to make the best use of UAV technologywithout cause too many problems . The FAA is currently write rule for the use of commercial-grade drones , which are presently illegal ( unless you ’re BP in Alaska ) . The process is expect to take several more old age . So you may one sidereal day get to fly your quadcopter around El Capitan . Just not any day very soon . [ NPS ]
