During Apple ’s Super Tablet 16 this week , Tim Cook boasted of processing carrying out that kicks Nvidia ’s Tegra 3 in the face . By a factor of four . Do n’t believe the ballyhoo — ever .

Now of course a direct rival is going to cry foul when its prized chip is badmouthed at one of the most wide - followed technical school result of the class . But Nvidia is spot on — glide like this mean reasonably much nothing .

This has been the futility of incarnate , synthetic benchmarking for literally decades : since the Clarence Day of early GPU state of war , the intact plot has been rigged . company will “ test ” their products in a race they ’re bound to make headway . It ’s why test like 3DMark and PCMark are useless . GPU makers have been known to carefully craft raw drivers to expressly supercharge execution in popular games they know reviewers will habituate — it ’s all a slipstream to manipulate that bar graph . Nvidia is just as guilty of it as anyone else — they make crowing ginmill graphs too , after all .
So yes , of course the new iPad is fast . It ’ll be faster than the iPad 1 and 2 . It ’ll probably be fast than most of its competition . But slapping a “ 4x ” label atop is bright indolent selling . People like bar graphs . Taller is better . Bigger telephone number next to an tenner is better . This will convince most people that they ’re buying the fastest pill of them all . But if you really manage about speed — and maybe that ’s not even worth caring about — wait until we , and the eternal rest of the misanthropical , opinionated , independent technical school community , put New iPad through the wringer .
