Tanzania ’s Lake Natron isthe most caustic body of H2O on Earth – and that makes it a terrific , if spookily beautiful , seat .
The ominously colored consortium take its name fromthe by nature occur table salt - mixture that saturate its depths . Natron ( the mineral ) was once used by the ancient Egyptians as a dry agent in the mumification necrosis process ; and in the unholy brine of its namesake , where temperature reach 140 degrees Fahrenheit , and alkalinity horizontal surface fall in the sharply inhospitable kitchen range of pH 9–10.5 , it serve a similar purpose . Via New Scientist :
PhotographerNick Brandt , who has a foresightful association with east Africa – he directed the video forMichael Jackson ’s Earth Songthere in 1995 – train a roundabout way from his usual employment when he discover perfectly preserved chick and bats on the shoreline . “ I could not assist but snap them , ” he says . “ No one knows for certain exactly how they die out , but it appear that the extreme reflective nature of the lake ’s airfoil confuse them , and like birds crash into plate drinking glass windows , they crash into the lake . ”

According toNew Scientist , Brandt in reality arranges these birds into the airs you see here . How he managed this if the doll are , in fact , calcify has left us a little bewildered ( does he regain them in these poses , or can they be positioned , to some extent ? ) , but we think you ’ll agree the effect is stunning .
