NYU psychologist Gary Marcus has pennedan interesting articlefor The New Yorker in which he complains about how some scientists are using science itself as a way to rekindle beliefs in the supernatural .

The two thinkers in particular that Marcus has chosen to pick on include contrived intelligence investigator Jürgen Schmidhuber , who has talked about “ computational theology , ” and neuroscientist David Eagleman , who has proposed a quasi - religious scene he calls “ Possibilianism . ”

Marcus writes :

Schmidhuber , in a military post on Ray Kurzweil ’s A.I. blog , ” In the beginning was the code , ” begin with the premiss that there “ is a fastest , optimal , most efficient way of computing all logically possible universes , include ours — if ours is estimable ( no grounds against this ) . ” Schmidhuber further elaborates on a “ God - like ‘ Great Programmer , ’ ” and a method by which it would “ create and get the hang all logically possible universes . ” From this follows what Schmidhuber describes as “ Computational Theology , ” a component of which is the undeniably heartening claim that “ your own aliveness must be very important in the grand outline of thing . ” Over all , indicate Schmidhuber , Computational Theology “ is compatible with religions claiming that ‘ all is one ’ and ‘ everything is connect to everything . ’ ”

If Schmidhuber ’s logic is hard to follow , Eagleman ’s is not ; there is no allusion to computing logically potential universe of discourse , nor is there technical - but - nebular talk of quantum computation . rather , Eagleman is concerned in the limits of our own knowledge , and what we can derive from what we do not cognize … Eagleman target to “ make the case that our ignorance of the cosmos is too vast to pull to atheism . ” allot to Eagleman , his design , Possibilianism , ” emphasizes the geographic expedition of new , unconsidered possibilities , ” and is “ well-situated hold multiple approximation in mind ; it is not interested in commit to any particular floor . ” Eagleman ’s poster youngster is the Hubble Ultra Deep Field experiment ; in a 2010 PopTech talk , Eagleman begin by standing in front of a cloud of genius and describing an experiment that revealed that there were a “ thousand trillion principal ” in a diminutive recession of universe that was antecedently thought to be dark , “ all of them with the potential difference to house unsung forms of biology . ” Eagleman conclude , “ This is a good conscious - raiser to think about the size of it of the secret that circumvent us . ” In other words , if we did n’t know what was hiding out there , who ’s to say there is n’t a godlike God Almighty after all ?

Among his many concerns , Marcus had this to say :

Burning Blade Tavern Epic Universe

Any agnostic is detached to think that his favorite faith has not yet been completely disproven . But anyone who wishes to play science into the contestation must acknowledge that the evidence thus far is weak , especially when it is combine statistically , in the way of a meta - psychoanalysis . To accentuate the qualitative conclusion ( X has not been absolutely evidence to be false ) while disregard the collective weight of the quantitative information ( i.e. , that most grounds points aside from X ) is a fallacy , akin to holding out a notion in fly caribou on the ground that there could yet be sleighs that we have not yet seen .

Scientists and non - scientists likewise are still free to believe whatever they want , but the grounds for religion have to be the same as they ever were : religion , not science . Science can not absolutely prove that there is no divine creator , but the tools of science do allow us to consider the existing evidence , and portion likeliness to those hypotheses ; by ignoring those putz , Eagleman does science a ill turn .

I consider Marcus is being a bit too harsh and constrictive , here ( not to mention that his view smacks of older - timelogical positivity ) . Eagleman is not crap any extraordinary title . He ’s but say there ’s a lot we do n’t roll in the hay about what we do n’t know , and that new selective information could eventually fall to light which could paradigmatically alter our perspective of our place in the universe . Likethisfor object lesson .

If anything , to deny this possibility — and the rightfulness to hypothesize about such matter — is a kind of sinful , unproven claim that Marcus himself is railing against .
