Director Josh Trank and doer Dane DeHaan , Alex Russell and Michael B. Jordan chatted with us about their favorite Chronicle moments , the Akira influence , and how they avoided the cliché of the evil loner . Minor spoilers ahead …

How much influence did Akira have on this film .
Josh Trank : I ’m a huge fan of all things Akira , it ’s in spades a gravid influence on the movie . And since you ’ve figure the picture you may tell there are many influences on the film [ including ] Carrie [ and ] The Fury . There ’s so much that we were able to put into this movie because these character are really a reflexion of who we were as teenager .
When I was that eld , I would pay as much as an homage to the family relationship in my real life from and all my influences , and anime and movies and video games and characters who I would really emulate . I thought that in this film there ’s a great circumstance for picture homages . But without being too blatant about it . Implementing those influences gracefully and respectfully , without doing a rent - off or playing out the same idea out entirely . I love those movies and I really wanted to make my own fresh take on all those things .

The prospect between Andrew and the police force felt precisely like Tetsuo ’s violent disorder through Neo Tokyo . Was that knowing ?
Josh Trank : Yeah . Absolutely . It ’s shady because if you had telekinesis and you were going on a rampage , that ’s just what would pass . If this was a real event , everyone would say , “ that small fry just went Akira on everyone . ” And that was something I used to say growing up , “ I ’m gon na go Akira on them . ” When Max [ Landis the screenwriter ] and I were verbalise about the script before it was even written we ’d just say , “ And then he just basically buy the farm Akira on them . ” So …
Did you get any joy out of watching Andrew pass away all Akira ? He beats up on the popular kids pretty hard .

Josh Trank : Yeah , it was cathartic . I think if I was that years and going through whatever I went though then , I ’d be doing that probably the next twenty-four hour period . Because nobody would know you did that , there would be no evidence . As a more familiarized adult , decent now , I would be a lot more creditworthy . I think the genuine tragedy is having that kind of divine ability at that eld . There ’s nothing to really keep you from micturate a more irrational response to antagonism .
permit ’s speak to Andrew ’s character a petty turn , do you intend people are going to sympathise Andrew , or will they just blindly detest him ? Can you think can you elaborate about why he is so unfriendly ?
Josh Trank : This is a fry who has done nothing faulty . Ever . He has nowhere to hide from anything , and we really demonstrate that from the opening guessing of the motion picture . Most kids growing up all over the world , their bedroom is their hideout from the rest of the earthly concern . And I think everybody feels alienated to some degree , some kid objectively are more alienated than others , and this is a kid who is unfeignedly alone and nobody really realise him . I really did n’t want to meet off of a cliché of that . Because I really live that produce up .

I would respond very strongly to movies where they habituate the cliché of the lone hand . When you ’ve been push to the side your whole life-time rise up , you build up a bit of a defense and anger to the outside domain . It ’s just a biproduct or that experience . Andrew , when we start to shoot , he ’s at a spot where he is n’t fast-growing toward anybody . He is n’t press back he ’s just getting underprice on . We see his life as it plays out . I do n’t conceive anybody would have a reason to dislike him , I think we really sympathize with this kid in the outset .
Everyone has been calling this movie the American Akira , which is interesting because rumor said you [ Dane DeHaan ] were up for the theatrical role of Tetsuo in the remaking , how are Andrew and Tetsuo unlike ?
Dane DeHaan : I think that Tetsuo is a uncollectible - ass twenty something bike - riding drug addict . And I think that Andrew is an introverted adolescent with no friends .
