Charles and his married woman Ray Eames ’ furniture and architecture helped define mid - century American excogitation . But they were also tireless tinkerer and artificer , incessantly stargaze up new machine and experimenting with novel materials .
In the above exposure from 1958 Charles Eames is shown with his Do Nothing automobile , an early solar - powered plaything that had an array of bright , moving piece but no ostensible mathematical function . In a time when toy were expect to teach something or develop some skill , Eames had a more meditative intent . “ It is not hypothecate to do . It is theorize to be . It ’s whole function is in its being,”he saidof the toy dog .
Later , reflect on the toy , he said,“we now have a moment in meter which is very precious ; but this is valid only if the toy does nothing . ” It seems to me that the photo above — the toy whirring and Eames looking hopefully to the sun — does a all right job of captivate that cherished here and now .
