Few directors seem good suited to a beetleweed far , far , aside than Guillermo del Toro . The Oscar - gain ground director ofThe Shape of Water , Pan ’s Labyrinth , Hellboy , Pacific Rim , and so many others , flourish onpractical creatures , sweeping romance , and big - musical scale adventure . He ’d be consummate for Star Wars so , surely he ’d never make a Star Wars pic , proper ?
Well , apparently , that was in reality in the works at some spot . On theHappy , Sad , Confused podcast , writer David Goyer ( who worked withdel Toro onBlade II ) uncover that he write a Star Wars book that was going to be directed by del Torowhich did n’t fall out . “ There was just a peck of behind [ the setting ] clobber move on at Lucasfilm at the time , ” Goyer said . “ But it ’s a cool hand . ”
Soon after , del Toro himself confirmed the news on X. “ True , ” the conductor posted . “ Ca n’t say much . Maybe two letters “ J ” and “ BB ” is that three letters ? ” Yes , Guillermo , it is . Three letters that are in the name Jabba in fact . But he , of course of action , did n’t say anything beyond that . Here ’s del Toro ’s confirmation as well as Goyer ’s citation .

io9 reached out to Lucasfilm for any likely input or elucidation on this news and we ’ll update the story if or when we take heed . But , honestly , if the book did n’t get made because of some interior political relation , that ’s not something anyone is going to comment on in public .
Goyer mentions two other thing too . First , he says the del Toro drama materialize about four years ago , which is telling . He also says he wrote a “ script - ment for an Origins of the Jedi picture show … that took place 25,000 year before the first Star Wars film . ” immense tidbits of info so let ’s take each on its own .
First , four year ago would put the maturation around the release of The Rise of Skywalker . That was plain a disruptive time at the party after that film failed to live up to first moment , both critically and financially , and most experience that receipt made the fellowship very conservative about novel movies . ( Hence it is now four years later on and we still do n’t know what the next Star Wars motion picture is . )
Second , Goyer ’s script isexactly the idea that James Mangoldwas announced to be writing and directing . Did Lucasfilm like Goyer ’s idea but not his treatment ? Did Mangold come in with a strong mind ? We do n’t know at the moment what the connection is there but it has all the fashioning of its own drama .
