What you ’re seeing above is a picture of a discipline done by Sandra Zetina and Roberto Zenit , at the National Autonomous University of Mexico . They were take a proficiency pioneered by panther David Alfaro Siquieros , who used the mixing of different density of paint in his paintings . It was a proficiency he called “ accidental painting . ” Outside of the art world it is called Rayleigh - Taylor instability .
The instability comes from the different density of the rouge . The lily-white rouge is denser , and so when it ’s poured on top of the black paint , blobs of it burrow down into the black paint . These become pockets and expand , while some dim white paint is still on the Earth’s surface . The paints do mix , but not altogether or regularly . This is Rayleigh - Taylor unstableness .
The paintings are scarcely the only example . Rayleigh - Taylor unstableness creates these pocket of one denseness separated by recollective , spindly fingerbreadth of another density all over the raw globe . It ’s hear in the sea and in the atmosphere , where , for reasons of temperature or brininess , denser petrol and liquid is occasionally dumped over less - heavy material and tunnels downwards , just like the paint . In space , stars extrude denser cloth over lighter material all the time , and sometimes denser stuff can be on the exterior of a nebula , being drawn inwards by a generator of somberness . All of these will display the same instability as paint mixing . Tf you want to do this at domicile , and do n’t need paint everywhere , colored oil and water , or milk and molasses work just as well .
