Before Section Eight Productions settled on rotoscoping as the filmmaking technique to bring Philip K. Dick ’s A Scanner Darkly to the cover , the studio Rustmonkey create this black - and - white , CG test animation for the moving picture .

Animator Brian White created this animation , base on painting by Daniel Thron ( in addition to being a visual effects house decorator , Thron also write and directed last year ’s short zombie spirit police proceduralSpoiler ) . It certainly captures the story ’s surreality , fuse with a second of a classical B - movie vibe . Thron explains that he pop out play on the animation as soon as Steven Soderbergh and Richard Linklater picked up the film rights . alas , though , he did n’t have representation at the time , and was n’t able to get anyone at Section Eight to take a spirit at his take on A Scanner Darkly .
