This photo from 1916 is of a fire at the Treasury Dept . ’s “ Bureau of Engraving and Printing , ” presumptively in Washington , D.C. Mysteriously , however , whomever labeled it described the fervidness as “ spontaneous burning . ”
We may never be certain what our anon. archivist really meant by that . Perhaps an engraver dead bust into flame , setting the whole building on fire . Or perhaps the building itself on the spur of the moment caught on fire for no grounds . Either way , Dave post thisintriguing image on Shorpy ( above ) , and a commenter noticed that it looked like this ( below ) present - day Cartesian product in D.C. , on Raoul Wallenburg Place .
