Refraction is a mind - bending idea . Light passes through a clear object , and it comes out the other side , inverted . TheShooting Challengeresults that follow are must - see , the winner is staggering and … well … we raid a deceiver , too .

Rebel XS , 200 mm , f 6.3 , 1/320
This is a perspective outside my flat window . It was pretty crappy in NYC today , so I prefer bleak and white to help portray the temper .
[ Ed greenback : it ’s specially striking that the window is actually dirty but the glass ball is dead vindicated . ]

Simple Inversion
After spending the better part of the week search for a quartz Lucille Ball I finally locate one and take off to the local botanical garden to do some shooting . This specific shot was taken in an area which is very popular for wedding party photography in my field . I took the jibe by hand with my Canon 7D with a Canon 15 - 85 lens . My preferences were ISO 200 , 1/250 , F/9 . Special deferred payment for the shot location go bad out to my fantastic lady friend , Jen .

Teddy Drop
Having recently undergone lasik surgical process , my wife needs to apply eye set down frequently . I drive advantage of this and shot as she dish out her nightly drops . refract in the drop is her lovable bedside teddy bear of Nipponese lineage , which I turned upside - down so as to appear in a favorable orientation course .
Shooting Info :
Sony A550 , Tamron 90 mm Macro Lens , f5.6 , 1/125 sec . with built - in flash , from minimum focus distance .

Andrew Jackson, Portrait
Using a canon EOS rebel t1i with a Tamron 18 - 200 mm 1:3.5 - 6.3 genus Lens , ISO 3200 , F6.3 and 1/15 shutter stop number .
Out of all the snapshot I postulate , this one came out to me the most meaningful . I used a tripod and placed a glass marble on a mirror and put some cash over it to refract Andrew Jackson ’s boldness . To me this photo represents the irony of money and happiness because Jacksons face look like he ’s frowning , but that ’s your call .
[ Ed note : It ’s almost as if he ’s saying , “ Put me back ! ! ” ]

WINNER
I drilled a small hole through the glass of an incandescent bulb and make full it with water . Image was frivol away with a Sony a700 camera . 1/30 sec at f/13 , 200 ISO and lens of the eye at 105 mm . Viewing newer engineering through sure-enough .
[ erectile dysfunction note : wondrous construct , dead executed . ]
-Logan Buell

Now , not everyone in the gallery below ( full sizes onflickr ) captured a honest refraction . You ’ll see a few reflection ( like the first shot in the first verandah ) and other miss . But I was glad to see hoi polloi judge , so I include the photos anyway as a ecumenical learnedness opportunity for us all — a non - judgmental reading of what not to do .
As always , thanks for the participation . It ’s the most playfulness I have all week .
